The Patch - "Grow, Eat, Share"
The Patch is an exciting grass roots initiative. Walk into Thursday’s “Grow, Eat, Share” program and you’ll find a hive of activity. Some learners are writing up the results of a plant study session whilst others are chopping vegetables at the mobile kitchen, preparing soup for a shared lunch. Step out the back to the productive garden and join in with learners picking herbs and salad greens. A local community member has just dropped by to donate some bags of autumn leaves for the compost bay and is in conversation with learners about various composting methods. Others who are participating in “The Patch Pickers” program have just returned from picking excess oranges from a local tree - ready for marmalade making next week. This is The Patch in action! It’s about fostering connectedness with the community through eco-lifestyle events. The program is mobile and flexible and includes regular community activities based around harvesting seasonal produce and flower picking. We encourage the drop in and participation of the wider community. It’s all about relationships!

The Patch Pickers
The Patch Pickers is an initiative of the Nhill Learning Centre all about reducing food waste and sharing harvest abundance.
In the wider Nhill community there are many backyard fruit trees that need harvesting each year. Sometimes the fruit that grows on these trees goes unharvested and wasted.
To avoid that waste, The Patch Pickers are happy to help you out. At harvest time, The Patch Pickers gather the fruit from backyards or wild trees that would otherwise be wasted. This fruit is then shared between the tree owner and The Patch,
While the fruit tree owner enjoys a portion of their tasty crop, the rest returns to The Patch to be pickled, preserved or just passed on at our regular Produce Swaps.
Ways you can be involved:
• Register your fruit tree.
• Share your preserving or pickling skills with our enthusiastic team of Pickers
• Join our seasonal Produce Swaps at The Patch
